Pop Culture in My Own Culture

a.     K-POP

b.     K-POP is Korean Popular Music. An addictive rhythm and dances are the biggest music style of K-POP. These days, K-Pop singers not only come from Korea but also from Japan, Taiwan and so on.

c.     Trends are formed through K-POP. You can listen to K-POP wherever you go to Korean restaurants, cafes, and markets. Famous K-POP singers’ clothes and accessories, cosmetics they use, and even their hairstyles are popular. These days, K-POP is loved around the world and has become an opportunity to make Korea more known to the world.

e.     I think K-POP is the best word to represent Korea now. Because K-POP singers are good at dancing, singing and even acting. They are pretty and handsome, and they make a lot of money, so they are teenagers’ idols. All the things that are popular in Korea are the influence of K-POP artists, as their clothes and every move they take becomes an issue and become popular.

Unit 4 Reflection

Unit4 was about music. I learned about the 40-top charts music such as Senorita from Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. During this chapter I had a presentation about Music Genre, Glam Rock. Through the presentation I got some information about music genre. And I read 4 texts. First text was ‘same old song’. This text was talking about pop music contains violence and sexual content. In addition, pop music is not for adults, that is for children and teenagers. Children need boundary and they have to be protected. Second text was ‘Pop music the same’. This text was talking about all pop music is same. Some scientists had a research of lots of song and they realized pop music has same style so that we can predict what is going to be famous. Third one was ‘IHOB: blues text’. From this text I learned about blues history. The text explained about blues history from 1500 to 1960. There was long history of developing blues genre and how much they changed. In the past, Africans were slaves and they could not express their feeling and they could not talk. Thus, they communicated with song. Last text was history of rap. This presents what is rap genre. Rap is a delivery method and configurations. Through class I learned various kinds of music genre. Therefore, I could understand music genre and I explored new music genre such as Glam Rock, Heavy Metal and so on. Those things are really interesting and I could have various views of different music.

My aha moment is presentation about Glam Rock.  Glam Rock’s style was really new to me. That was so interesting and giving a culture shock. I knew about Rock, but I did not have any idea about different sorts of Rock genre. The music was so amazing. I felt excited when I listened Glam Rock music at first. Most of music is good, interesting and something special. The presentation was so meaningful because I could know many music genres from the presentation.

I did not know about blues history. I did not know the blues history is really long and the music style had changed a lot by the time. I did not even know that blues created by African Americans. They conveyed important information by singing. The blues has many kinds of styles and every blues shows their own feeling. They could not express their emotion easily because they were slaves. Those facts were so interesting and made me to realize the origin purpose of blues songs.

A song that moved me

   
 
          The song I was impressed with was sung by "Ok Sang Dal Bit", a Korean singer-song writer. When I was in high school, I often felt a lot of academic stress and lethargy while studying. Whenever I felt that way, I heard this song. This song tells me that even though no one is interested in your sorrows and loneliness, I have always supported you and you had a lot of hard work today. At that time, I was comforted by listening to the lyrics of this song. Silent melodies and lyrical lyrics seemed to console me. And no matter what you do, it seems like a message telling you not to give up because you are doing well enough now. Even now, when I feel lonely or tired, I listen to this song and the song gives me hope and energy.

Music Genre Presentation

    Glam rock genre was popular in the early 1970s. Glam rock began in 1971 when the twinkling-clad T.Rex sang “Hot Love” on the British television program “Top of The Pops”. The biggest characteristic is that it is neutral and decadent. They wore colorful clothes and used glittering ornaments. They paid more attention to their appearance than to his music, so there are no special musical features. The famous singer in Glam rock was David Bowie.

           Through these few weeks, I learned about movie. We explored some genres through our presentations, so I could learn some new genres such as concert films and film noir. I also briefly looked 4 websites which are showing about actor, actress, and celebrities. We had a lecture about history of cinema. I did not know famous movies are mostly from Hollywood. In addition, I watched video which was first film, and that was almost looks like connection of some pictures and gif. I read some texts about Tyler Perry and why we carve horror movies. In Tyler Perry text, I could learn African American movies. I have not watched and known about African American movie. Thus, I did not know they cast out only African American. Perry earns lots of money and he is a celebrity, too. In why we carve horror movies text, I could learn why people want to watch and enjoy horror movies. Audiences want to show they are not afraid of scary movie and they can feel weird kind of fun. Furthermore, people can feel that they are normal than people who from the horror movies. People use real crime to make horror movies too. My second presentation was movie poster. We had a presentation about movie poster. Each of us received a story line and we had to make a story and make a poster or trailer. I made a poster and I imagined and created a story. Through that activity, I realized that we can create a movie. Because I thought that producing a movie is really difficult so that I cannot create new one before.

           My aha moment was Tyler Perry. I knew that we do not have many movies about African American. I did not know who is Tyler Perry and he produced so many movies. Through the text, I learned he had lots of talents of various fields. He is a writer, actor, and a director. He only produces movies which are about African American and shows their life. Those movies targets are not everyone, just for specific people who are interested in African American. Even though he casts out only African American, his movies give us strong message such as importance of family.

           I did not know that why people like horror movies. Personally, I hate horror movie because I do not like the moment when I am surprised. In addition, when I watched a horror movie, I cannot sleep well for few days. However, people who like horror movie enjoy watching horror movie because they can feel exciting when they watch them. Also, horror movies give an opportunity to be cruel instead of being cruel in real life. They can feel vicarious satisfaction through watching horror movies.

Chicago International Film Festival Review

'Out of Tune'

         It is said that human's desires are endless. What do you think? I have been to the Chicago International Film Festival. I watched a movie there.

      

         The title of the movie is 'Out of Tune', which is produced in Denmark. I watched the movie with my classmate Kailin at AMC River East 21 on Saturday, October 23th at 8 p.m. The movie is about a successful businessman Markus who went to prison. Markus was sent to jail, and at first, he did not fit in well. However, a jailer who admires him kept trying to get close to him and Markus joined choir. And he gets to know an unofficial leader who is Niel and a man named Simon. Markus wants to be the leader instead of Niel. So, using Simon and the jailer who respect him, he tries to be the leader. But he ends up failing. And he takes advantage of his power to hit choir’s people, and he leaves the place unceremoniously.

        The most impressive scene for me is when Markus leaves them relentlessly as people do not follow his plan. I was a little shocked to see that he used his power to do what he wanted, even in the jail. Even though he went to prison for committing a mistake. Prison is where he goes to repent his sins, and he has tried not to think of changing himself, but to reign over those who are there again with his power. In the process, I could not understand why he was trying to dominate, harming Niel, Simon and Jailer. Did he want to rule over people by losing the faith of those who respect him.

       Personally, I was satisfied with this movie. I was impressed by the way the serious story was told with humor. It was a great opportunity to have fun and at the same time be aware of the realities of society. This movie made me think a lot. There seems to be no end to human greed in every way, not just money. Through this film, I could learn that human greed is something that cannot be fulfilled, and that we should try not to live too greedy.
